Airplanes hit wildlife. Here’s how scientists are trying to prevent it.
More than 10,000 collisions between animals and airplanes are reported each year to the FAA, and those numbers are on the rise. Specialists work around the clock to keep airport wildlife strikes from turning deadly, employing a range of tactics from habitat management to sequencing bird DNA. Can they keep up with the pace of travel? The Verge Science team ventured from the tarmac to the feather identification lab to find out. Check out our latest video to learn more - and find out what “snarge” is.

Why some city neighborhoods are hotter than others
Просмотров 71 тыс.2 года назад
Satellite data shows that cities have hotter average surface temperatures than surrounding areas. Pollution, asphalt, and lack of green spaces all contribute to what scientists call the "urban heat island effect." This extreme heat can have deadly consequences. The Verge science team hit New York’s streets with a thermal camera to learn just how hot cities can get, and why. Read more: bit.ly/2V...
Understanding brain signals through music made from neurons
Просмотров 47 тыс.2 года назад
Have you ever listened to a neuron? Neuroscientists can learn about the brain by recording synaptic activity from brain cells under a microscope. One scientist is turning data from those experiments into music. The Verge Science team joined Simón(e) Sun in the lab - and the recording studio - to create a song out of a brain cell. Trees migrate. This scientist shoots them to understand how
Просмотров 213 тыс.3 года назад
Trees move. They’ve been slowly migrating to new habitats since the last ice age. But these days, they’re having trouble keeping up with climate change, leaving park agencies and forest managers with tough decisions. The Verge Science team went into the woods with an ecophysiologist - and her shotgun - to learn how and why trees migrate, and why it matters. Read more: bit.ly/2S1E8JH 0:00 Intro ...
“Flushable” wipes are ruining sewage plants
Просмотров 123 тыс.3 года назад
Wipes and other products that get flushed down the toilet cause millions of dollars in problems for cities like New York. They clog up the machinery at sewage plants like the Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Verge Science video team went to see the damage wipes can do, and got up close and personal with the bits of fabric that cost cities millions and millions of dollars each year t...
This metal is more valuable than gold
Просмотров 801 тыс.3 года назад
The theft of catalytic converters is on the rise due to the value of the precious metals they contain. One of these metals, palladium, is now more valuable than gold and is crucial in helping to clean up toxic emissions. As soaring demand creates a palladium crunch, the race is on to find new alternatives - or rethink how we use palladium in the future. Special thanks to Rockaway Recycling for ...

Is it time to say goodbye to the gas stove?
Просмотров 185 тыс.3 года назад
The debate over which stove to use is moving beyond our kitchens, and into our energy grid. More and more research is showing that natural gas is not the harmless energy source it was once thought to be. As some cities are taking action in the race to reduce emissions, the natural gas industry is fighting back. The last big battleground? Our stovetops. Learn more: bit.ly/3wiA2fy Subscribe: bit....

I disagree with what she says about our coastal cities are first in line to feel the effects of climate change. Everyone is already feeling the extreme temperatures, and unprecedented fast moving fires are threatening our interiors. It has always bothered me that sea-rise and loss of coastal land is prefaced as the chief concern. By the time we see a big rise in sea levels the bulk of humanity will have died off due to starvation, heat, and unimaginable weather events.
7.6Billion versus 0.4Billion, seriously USA (Myanmar and Liberia) get with the program!
"americans can't be bothered to switch" so instead you need to bother the rest of the world
Here's the reason why ppl [including me] hate when someone only uses metric: the viewers are forced to translate and learn how 1 local weird system works At this point I feel like I know imperial 10x better than 95% americans know metric. how about that, instead of forcing the whole world to learn this mess, ppl will inconvinience americans into learning something. and then people say how hard it is to learn metric because they don't see it anywhere. I wonder why... also not all feet are 1 foot long, and not all thumbs are 1 inch long, also, you just confused width with length here. You just see things throughout your life and compare them and remmember how tall things are. 190cm is avery tall person, 1m is about the level of a table, 1km could be the distance between your home and a shop.
Is there a coupon code to use? 😅

More efficient light bulbs, clean cheap electricity that they charge us more for. The future is stupid.
"What they gave me was this really large capsule that had ... basically, it's an upper and a downer is what it is. I think the downer is for your stomach, and the upper is so you don't go to sleep." NO, no, no! The upper and the downer are simply designed to cancel each other out, so you don't go up or down. THAT'S what Zero G is! Science, dude!
You got those 2 types of waves those zenneck and Tesla waves one uses the transverse electric field as a waveguide which induces a longitudinal magneto dielectric wave and the other uses to tm to induce zenneck waves those are the 2 current technologies already used by military and also gen pop but at a smaller scale ..
Americans measure speed in furlongs per fortnight.
What are the odds that these records travel in a straight line through space without coming into the gravitational field of some celestial body that will draw them into a decaying orbit until they are pulled in and destroyed via impact? It is inevitable that this will happen eventually. I guess the hope is that they will be discovered before this happens.

Democratic countries prefer Metric becouse it is simply a better system of units than imperial The metric system is a consistent and coherent system of units. In other words, it fits together very well and calculations are easy because it is decimal. This is a big advantage for use in the home, education, industry and science.

Hello, I’m from Novosibirsk and at the same time a big fan of foxes, and, oddly enough, I couldn’t ignore the story you describe. This is one of those things that makes me proud of where I come from. Although for the general public, even in our city, the experiment remains unknown. Most people around me believe that foxes are wild animals that belong in the forest, although in fact these animals are domesticated and fox cubs are bought from breeders in the same way as kittens or puppies are bought. The funny thing is that most nurseries and the annual fox exhibition are not even here, but in the capital, and I find this damn unfair.
Alternate title: 4,400 tons of nuclear waste and plenty of places to put it.
@VergeScience At 4:15, you say the 95% pass is a much higher benchmark than the industry 60% pass threshold, and highlight those numbers on the comparison table. But it's clearly visible on the comparison table that the industry test uses a 12.5mm sieve for the 60%, whereas the utility test (IWSFG) uses a 25mm sieve -- which makes the industry test a higher bar on that one dimension. How can you be sure that the 60% at 12.5mm is a lower bar than 95% at 25mm?

I think I read it in a meme, but that quiet sums up the needed level of domestication: Dog sniffs hand: are we best friends now?
Foxes were often kept as pets back before the 20th Century and even during that time in the early years. A person could go into a country pub and find a fox relaxing on a blanket in the corner. This really isn’t a new thing.
Thanks, I hate it. How horrible to imagine these generations of poor foxes in these tiny cages. I also get uncomfortable around dogs, it just feels wrong how much they circle around the humans.
